Coleman History

Here at Andersen Heating, we get the question, “I thought Coleman made camping gear?”. Here is some history to answer this question.

  • 1901  W.C. Coleman, a man with poor eyesight, but great vision, invents the first Coleman lantern
  • 1925  W.C. ’s son Sheldon joins the company with a degree in mechanical engineering and understanding of creating light through combustion. He decides to transfer this knowledge to home heating to further diversify the company’s products.
  • 1934  Coleman Starts producing gas floor furnaces and oil space heaters under the Coleman brand name.
  • 1981 Coleman extends it’s product offering for the residential commercial HVAC market.
  • 1996 York International, a Fortune 500 HVAC manufacturer know for innovation, purchases Coleman.
  • 2004 Coleman HVAC introduces the Echelon residential line; the quietest most efficient heating and cooling products the industry has ever seen.
  • 2005 Johnson Controls, a $37 billion dollar company, and the worlds leader in controls, purchases York/Coleman investing millions in product design and development.
  • 2007 Coleman introduces the most efficient gas furnaces and heat pumps ever made to the residential market.
  • 2009 Coleman moves all product assembly back to the US. Continuing a tradition of US quality, innovation and American made durability.
